Also called maximum retail price
MRP is the maximum retail price printed on packaged goods in India, under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules. It includes all taxes. A shop can sell below the MRP, but never above it. The label must also show details such as the net quantity, the date of manufacture and a customer care contact.
Charging more than MRP can lead to complaints and penalties, even for a few rupees on a cold drink. MRP can also change between batches of the same product, so a shop holding old and new stock may legally have two different ceilings on the shelf at once.
Old stock of a shampoo carries an MRP of ₹180 and the new batch says ₹195. Selling the old batch at ₹195 is overcharging. Selling the new batch at ₹195 is fine. Okount stores MRP per batch and enforces it as a ceiling at billing.
